Formal Family Pix at a Wedding: Often Overlooked but Important?

Hi All,

I will let you in on something; amongst photographers, there is a growing fear of taking formal posed family portraits at a wedding. I mean, let's face it, these are not the most fun or creative images that you will get on your wedding day! Unfortunately, for many photographers and hence, the couples who hire them, the result is often lackluster "just line 'em up" pictures of your family members at best and nothing at all at worst.

Now, many photographers claim that couples just don't care about these formal pictures anymore so they don't need to put much effort into them. However, those same photographers admit that the formal portraits are the most likely to be reordered by the couple or their families.

So, the question that I would like you, my loyal readers, to chime on is what do formal posed family portraits mean to you? What do they mean to your parents? What will they mean to your children and grandchildren?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Bill

yes....formal pictures are always important...but so are the candid ones.

there needs to be balance between the two. doing this will ensure that you've captured all elements of the wedding day.

when you meet with the bridal couple it is imperative that you get a feel for their personality and their interactions with their family. at that point is when you can make the determination whether to take more formal or more candid pictures.
